Kananaskis AB, T0L 2H0 50.68974, -115.124978

Canyon Campground is one of a few campgrounds located in the beautiful Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis country. Two types of campsites are offered. The first being sites that are nestled in the surrounding forest and with good privacy while the other type is located on well kept grass. Dry firewood is also available for free. The surrounding area is very scenic; the Canyon Creek trails can't be missed. Canyon Creek is a series of interpretive trails that cross the canyon on bridges and stairwells and have great lookouts. There is also a series of paved bike paths that run around the campground. Make sure to take a visit to the upper and lower Kananaskis lakes that are nearby. The campground does not accept reservations and is often full on weekends. It is recommended to come early if you plan to get a spot on a weekend.

This campground has 52 sites. It is open from June 16th to September 4th. It does not accept reservations.

Peter Lougheed Provincial Parks has many awesome campgrounds, including Canyon, and each campground boasts something different and speculator. Canyon’s signature is B loop. Like many of it’s ‘sister’ campgrounds Canyon’s B sites are open and with lots of space between sits. Though one thing it has that no other campground has, it is the view … B Loop is located in the valley at the base of Lower Kananaskis and there are smattering of trees to block your view of the mountains. If you want to be inspired trying to get the inner circle of sites 10-16 or the upper ring 19-28. (Attache Map site for reference). Every morning grab your coffee/tea, a chair and just breath as you take in the site. No picture can describe the beauty.

To review Canyon:

New “long-drops” this year, refreshing and clean, with the campground well kept, and the camp managers very helpful and accommodating, as always. Loops A and B your typically awesome Peter Loughheed sites, large and lots of space in between sites. As with any no power/no water, there is the hum of generators, though most campers are respectful of running all day and will shut them down when required. Loop C does have a small park for kids, and there is the lake and numerous trails close by. The Boulton Trading post is about a 8 minute drive or 20 minute bike ride or 30 minutes by the trails. Canyon is also located close to the Park Visitor Centre which should be visited at least once, another great secret at Peter Lougheed. Potable Water Filling Station in each loop or at the sani dump which is very convent and close by. All clean and well maintained.

First come First Serve: We went up Thursday night to reserve a site, aka pitched a tent (no chairs allowed to reserve). On Friday at 12:00 there were only 3 sites left and those went quickly.

Rating is 4/5 only because it no power and I can only last three days boon-docking.
